Chunky Heels

Making a comeback? There was a time when I swore off chunky heels and pledged my allegience to strictly skinny support. I will admit, I'm not completely opposed to thick, square heels. I can see it being cute with cropped pants, topped with a chunky wrap sweater or shorter shorts with a victorian blouse. There needs to be balance to make it work. If you're going to wear big shoes, you need a bigger top or wider bottoms to maintain outfit equilibrium. You wouldn't want your feet getting all the attention and this is coming from a girl who owns a closet full of shoes. [Left: Michael Kors Mary Janes, "Getaway"]

On the Red Carpet

The 2006 Teen Choice awards aired this past Sunday. Jess and Dane hosted the show. Absolutely thrilled that Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous Girl won "song of the summer." It was on repeat since the first time I heard it. Go Nelly! And, I can't agree more with the winner of "summer TV series," So you Think you can Dance. Loved the dance bit choreographed by Wade Robson to Justin Timberlake's, Sexy Back. So hot.

& plenty of fashion to dish.

Not really lovin' Jess' look. I think it's the hair or something. Too big, too curly?

Though, Rachel Bilson and Ashley Olsen looking fab.

And the hottie female award goes to Jessica Alba. Much deserved. She's on the top of my list these days. Always super trendy, not too flashy and never too revealing. Notice she never wears dresses/skirts above her knees?

Some other red carpet favorites - Kristen Cavallari and Mischa Barton.

Eva brings Sexy back

Tony Parker, I'm jealous. How hot does Eva Longoria look in her spread for Maxim's September issue? She's incredible & simply gorgeous. This girl is gutsy too. It's pretty admirable when you're confident enough to leave the house without make up. Then again, if I looked like this with make up on, I don't think i'd ever take it off.

One year older, one step closer

Whether I'm one year wiser is yet to be determined. Just purchased a plane ticket to LA this morning. I'm planning to do a little job hunting and a little apartment searching. How exciting!

Spent this weekend with close friends and family. For the special day, I found this spectacular Theory dress. I paid $80 and change for it. Original pricetag? $415! God love Bloomingdales, especially when they have their end of season clearance racks. The sage color works beautifully with a tanned bod.;)

Graphic Prints a la skulls?

I see skulls everywhere these days. This one in particular, by Alexander McQueen, is cute though.

Also worn by: Kate Moss, Ashlee Simpson, and Lindsay Lohan.

Because it's my birthday

Only because it's my birthday, I can liberate myself from this shopping ban that i have impressed on myself. Good thing there are so many sales worthy of shopping but...as expected, I can't find that "one" thing I'd want to wear to celebrate this occasion of being one year older.

Dropped into Jasmine Sola (familiar to my native eastcoasters) and they were having their end of season sale. Picked up a jersey tunic and a pair of Seychelles thong sandals for cheap! Ok, don't make fun but what do you think of this outfit for a casual bar night?

[Top by HIR 101, Jbrand jeans 12", Michael Kors metallic kicks, Cara Couture headband]

Just because I had my camera out, I took a picture of the Seychelles. =)

For Saturday night, I need something more wow. I guess I'm going to do more surfing. If I order by tonight, I'll still have the option to overnight. Because we all know, if I leave it to Saturday afternoon, I'll be crying when dinner rolls around with nothing to wear!

1980s Comeback

Let's just say I was really young in the 80s. Now I'm of age to witness the revival of 80s fashion. Of course, the style is reinvented somewhat to fit what we would consider fashionable today. Thank goodness big hair hasn't made its way back yet but who knows - maybe next year? Flourescent had its short claim a few years ago. I remember seeing neon yellows, hot pinks, and electron blues when I was abroad in Europe back in 2004. Next season, back at home, I saw the same colors dressing the shelves of department stores and boutiques. Although - the trend did go as quickly as it came.

Flashdance popularized the ripped sweatshirt, off-the-shoulder look. Similarly, it was the aerobics craze that led to leggings - something that we're all too familiar with today (Right: Mischa Barton and her sister in Sydney).

The long sweater cinched with a belt made its away into 80s and again, into the 21st century. Belts can do wonders for your outfit....love this trend.

Gilt fashion earrings and costume jewelry has survived both a few seasons and several years. If it gives us girls the same glitzy and glamorous feeling as it did in the 80s, why not? If not glitzy and glamorous, then how about fun and plastic? I have some plastic hoops and fun-colored beaded necklaces (also 80s inspired) draped over my jewlery box.

And headbands? Before, it was bands wrapping around the forehead. Today, we like chain-linked headbands like this one by Cara Couture. For more information on Cara Couture, read this article from Daily Candy. On sale btw at Intermix. I grabbed a silver and blue one in the store this past weekend!

And of course, I can't forget about Madonna - a fashion icon today and in the eighties. Madonna has always been this unconventional figure in history. Even though a large part of the 80s was about women in the workforce and an exhibition of corporate style both in attitude and dress, Madonna's influence broke the status-quo by making sex a fashion statement. She also brought about the cross, which is a trend I see surfacing in the near future [like this one by Kenneth Jay Lane, $58 - available on ShopBop]

What are you 80s observations? Please share, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Barneys Boston Virgin & Miscellany

I stepped into the new Barneys in the Copley Square Mall for the first time this past weekend. Everything still smelled so new! I was shopping with and for a friend. Even though it was tax-free weekend, there was this constant buzz in my ear that prevented me from splurging - and it kept on repeating LA. We found a lovely large studded Bulga bag in Chocolate for $299 from $485 & tax free! Even cheaper than Jessica's small yellow one I purchased last year. I convinced my friend to take the bag home with her. Perfect (for her) for the following reasons: 1) earthy color and easy to pair with outfits 2) large size makes a convenient tote for carrying things to/from work on the train 3) add's spunk & style to her corporate gear.

It might not be the latest thing anymore but it still seems to catch the attention of passerbys. FYI: Neimans is selling the small version for $296 online.

I can't lie - I was ooing and ahhing over a few things.
I had this belt in my hands for a few moments. By Eugenia Kim, this patent leather/elastic combo belt is the perfect style I've been searching for. It took strength to put it back. Ah, I will come across another.

And, anyone have feedback about Graham and Spencer, the maker of the Velvet line?

I first saw this Graham and Spencer dress in Intermix and again in Barneys, and yet again in People mag. I liked it the first, second, and third time I saw it but @ $231, maybe i'll wait for a good coupon code. I'll keep you all posted. =)

Btw, trend watch on these jumpers: [by IVY - available @ Intermix]

Lastly, Ashlee Simpson wearing a black pinafore jumper with Jessica, leaving the Ivy in LA. Jess isn't wearing a bra but she is wearing an adorable Rozae Nichols dress. I can't even see Ashlee, she's disappearing! I need to find out who makes her dress. Help, anyone?

The Skinny

The skinny on my weekend: As time grows near, the reality of moving is also crystalizing. It's been a pool of emotions up until this point - from excited and anxious to sad and happy - although strangely, I've never been so certain of anything in my life (aka i've put more thought into buying a pair of jeans). Like I've been saying, it's time to spread my wings and see where i'll go, trusting that I will be guided in the right direction. Needless to say, I'm trying to make most of my time here at home in the meantime.

Ok, thanks for reading up until this point. =) Time for the skinny on skinny jeans. Skinny jeans (I know, I'm just a little obsessed) - although it's the latest must-have on everyone's wishlist - these jeans do not accommodate all body types. I'm a firm believer in clothes fitting your body versus your body fitting the clothes, or rather not fitting your body. (huh?) So what does this mean, no matter what the trend or latest fashion statement, wear the clothes that can lift, push, and flatter your best assets.

In Style had a great how-to on wearing denim. Good news is that skinny jeans can work for people of all heights. Flipside, may not work as well for the curvy and top heavy. Best news? The range of denim is dizzying. There's always something for everyone. For ex, In Style votes the best "all-around" jean to be the "Tricky Lover Style" by Joe's (shown above, $158, 310-656-7898).

Now, if you are a wearer of skinny jeans - what shoes? I say flats (thonged sandals or kitten heeled pumps), ballet (roundish flats), or pumps (pointy or peeptoe). I just realized that In Style featured the London Sole ballet shoes (available on ShopBop) as being the best flat shoes to wear with skinnies! See my post about making Bold Statements.

Tops should be more loose, flowy and big - definitely not as tight as your jeans. See Victoria Beckham and Lindsay Lohan (pictured below) in their skinny jeans.

Lindsay for Elle

"Lindsay Lohan the most watchable star of her generation talks about Karma, Kabbalah, and the new rules for dating" by Andrew Goldman

So Lindsay is featured in the September 2006 issue of Elle. I have to give her credit -- she does look pretty stunning but really, how long ago was it that she was in Freaky Friday?

Dress up like Nicole

This week's dress up post is dedicated to my girl Nicole Ritchie. Nicole by day is all about short dresses, flip-flops, graphic tops, oversized sunglasses, headscarves, and Balenciaga. She has such consistent style and always wears her clothes really well or maybe her clothes just wear her really well? Either way, she's fabulous and I adore her. =)

To the Grave

From cherry prints to skulls - what's next? Skulls first crept into the design of Grail and now it's a fashion statement in the making - although, my first thoughts about it are on Harley riders and pirates of the caribbean. I'm not sure what to make of it so I'll leave it to the audience to judge.

Tiffany Alana skull scarves as seen on: Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie, Paris Hilton, and Carmen Electra. If anyone's interested, you can find the skull printed scarf on Blaec and Singer 22.

YSL Muse

I like very much. Classic enough to carry for a few seasons - perhaps even more so than the the Fendi Spy or Balenciaga. At $1,295, the YSL Muse ain't cheap but it's comparably priced next to your Chanel, Fendi, Louis, Balenciaga, and even Marc Jacobs.

It's a traditionally styled, no frills kind of bag aka no studs, no dangly strings, and no elaborate twists.

Available on Neiman Marcus. Free shipping too with coupon code "SUMMER"
